I can't just list one wonderful holiday celebration I have had. Any holiday I share with family is a holiday to remember.
My family and I used to always cut down our Christmas trees. The last time we cut down our Christmas tree though would be around Christmas 2006, I think. My dad, brother, step mom, and I were roaming around on this steep hill looking at all the trees growing trying to find the perfect one. With my step mom right behind me I noticed a great tree up ahead. I turned to point it out just in time to see her tripping and falling down. I started to laugh until I realized she was really hurt. Turned out she hurt her ankle so badly she had to have surgery on it. Yikes! That was definitely a trip I will remember. We still make fun of her to this day and constantly tease her about walking up or down hills. We love her though!
I believe it was Christmas of 2005 or possibly 2004 when I nearly lit our house on fire. It was a Christmas that was before my step mom, so it was just my brother, dad, and myself living at our house. Christmas was over, the food was eaten, the presents opened, and the sky was turning dark. My dad ended up headed to bed early since he was really sick with the flu and my brother decided to stay the night at his friend's house. I was left alone and bored Christmas night. Deciding I had nothing better to do then go to bed, I turned to the fireplace with the fire still lit and chose to use the fire poker to whack the wood and put out the fire. I, on accident, closed the latch to the fire place. Next thing I know the fire alarm is going off. I got up from the fire place and couldn't even see through the room it was so full of smoke. I grabbed a stocking and started using it to fan the alarm so it wouldn't wake my dad. Too late. He runs out his room to see me in the hallway with a stocking fanning the fire alarm. He asks if I had just taken a shower since the alarm is right outside the bathroom and if the water is hot enough the steam makes the alarm go off. I was speechless and he noticed smoke right after he asks me about the shower. He runs into the living room and I guess ends up seeing that the latch is causing smoke to not ventilate and flames slowly rising up the wall out of the fireplace. So he opens the latch and all the windows and doors. There was so much smoke that we spent most of the night out in his car so the house could ventilate it all. thankfully we had just gotten a new DVD player to use in the car for long road trips that we got for Christmas just a few hours before. So my dad and I watched movies and napped. While watching the movies he started joking with me about the whole incident since everything was going to be OK. he said, "If you wanted to spend time with me you could have just asked". The only downside about the incident was that the wall had to be scrubbed and then painted over because it was so black. We had a few things on the mantel that had to be thrown away as well. This topic seems to come up around every Christmas holiday. My dad teases me about how ridiculous I looked in the hallway fanning the fire alarm with a stocking. The family can't help but to laugh.
These previous holidays may sound all but wonderful, but they will be in the family for lifetimes. Everything turned out OK in the end and it just shows how big of klutz' my family is and always will be. It's the family outings that will always be cherished, both the good and the bad ones. It shows that no matter the circumstances we will always make the best of things and that's what makes the holidays what they should be!
